Interim Update for December 27

Two funerals

  • On Saturday, December 21, I conducted the funeral for Harley Polley at Auxters. I had met Harley at the Bellevue Care center, but did not make the connection that he was a St. John's member.
  • On Thursday, December 26, I conducted the funeral for Sandy Warden, also at Auxters. The committal was at the Bellevue Cememtery today, Friday.

Christmas Eve Dinners Delivered

On Tuesday, a large number of volunteers from St. John's gathered at the church to cook and deliver 165 meals to shut-in and economically challenged St. John's and community members. Menu: ham, scalloped potatoes, bacon green beans, dinner roll, apple sauce, fruit cookie. Sunday School children and youth created candy cane Christmas tree ornaments that were delivered with the meals. Thanks and kudos for all who took time out of their busy Christmas Eve schedule to do this ministry outreach.

Care center Communion

Christmas Eve was my scheduled day to do communion at Orchard Grove and Bellevue Care. So I brought my guitar, we sang some carols, read the Christmas gospel, and celebrated Holy Communion.

Christmas Eve Services

I thought Christmas Eve worship went well. Attendance was up over last year.

  • 2018 --- 5pm 147, 9pm 106, Total 253
  • 2019 --- 5pm 186, 9pm 113, Total 299

The music was excellent. Erik and Sarah, my son and daughter attended 5pm, and Erik was "blown away" by the organ. Shannon on the french horn, and Christ on the trumpet also added the excellence of the service. At the 5pm service I heard both the organ and the trumpet, and I looked up there was Chris playing organ with his left and and pedals, and trumpet with his right hand. Talk about walking and chewing gum at the same time!! Amazing! Thanks to all who did so much to make our Christmas celebration memorable and meaningful.

Fifth Sunday Outreach

Sunday we will wrap up our Christmas Giving Trees by bringing forward our offerings of caps, hats and mittens for a blessing prayer. Thanks to all who participated!

Council Installation

Council members, don't forget that a week from Sunday, January 5, will be installation of Council Members. Hope you can all be there -- we'll do this after the Hymn of the Day and Creed.

Interim Update for December 20, 2019

Well done Christmas Program!

Thanks and kudos to Cindy M., who put together and directed our Sunday School Christmas Program this past Sunday. Good job done by all in telling the Christmas story!

Funerals for Harley Polley and Sandy Warden

St. John's member Harley Polley died on Tuesday, and the funeral will be at Auxter's on Saturday, December 21, at 10:30 am. Harley was originally a member at St. Paul's but transferred to St. John's when he and Kathleen were married, as Kathleen has always been a Lutheran. They attended mostly Saturday worship, although not in recent years. You can read the obituary for Harley here.

This week I got a call from Kathy, Sandy Warden's daughter-in-law, that Sandy had taken a turn for the worse at The Meadows in Sandusky. I visited on Wednesday afternoon, and did a service of commendation for Sandy. I received word this morning that Sandy died late Thursday. Visitation will be December 26 from 4:00 - 7:30, with the sevice following immediately at 7:30 pm. You can read the obituary here.

Birthday Party for Jesus on Wednesday and Thursday

St. John's Preschool staff rolled out another super-fun Birthday Party for Jesus program on Wednesday morning and Thursday morning and afternoon. Parents and grandparents accomplished pre-school kids through many stations set up in the classrooms, Gathering Room, narthex and chapel. Then all gathered in the sanctuary for a message from "The Innkeeper" followed by songs by the kids. All the kids received a Christmas tree ornament crafted by the preschool staff. Lots of hard work and dedication by the staff made it all possible. Kudos and thanks!! Very impressive!

Plans for Offering Envelopes

Kristen has been working with the Stewardship Team to implement a new system of envelopes for congregation members to begin use in 2020. Kristen will print a sheet of labels for each regularly giving family, and a bundle of 50 blank offering envelopes. Members will peel off labels, which will have members name and offering number, and place on envelopes. Those who give weekly will need new labels in about a year. Those who give monthly, their lablesand envelopes will last much longer.

Visit to Ted K. at UTMC

On Tuesday I went to see Ted K. at UTMC -- he had just gotten out of surgery, and was just starting to wake up. Don't have an update as of this writing, but guessing that he's back in Bellevue and continuing his recovery at home. Keep this family in your prayers.

Poinsettias delivered on Thursday

Thanks to Roger, Ann, Jan, Shannon, Sophia and Olivia for picking up, delivering, and arranging the poinsettias for Advent 4 and Christmas celebration.

Busy time getting things ready for Christmas and end of year

Kristen, Jan and I have been working on the Christmas Eve bulletins, getting all the details ironed out with regard to the 5 pm and 9 pm services. Kristen has also been working on January Newsletter, our first online edition. Shaun will be working overtime to get things in order for end of year. Denise and Joanne will be busy getting the building looking its best for Christmas Eve. Thanks and kudos to our hard working staff!

Interim Update for December 13, 2019

Lunch with St. NIck

The Lunch with St. Nick event sponsored by the Bellevue Ministerial Assocation at the Bellevue Rec Center was, I think, a very nice community event. I attended representing St. John's. Each of the participating congregations had a table with an activity for the kids. For example, First Methodist did the lunch table. Another congregation did hot coca, another did face painting. I joined the group from Fireside UCC, which was headed up by Dale and Karen Wilson's daughter, Jeri (apologies if I have spelled her name wrong) who had purchased supplies to make caramel apples. She also brought a chocolate fountain, and kids would take an a pre-carmeled apple and dip it in the chocolate, then the kids colored on a Merry Christmas tage and attached it to the box holding the caramel apple.

It was a very nice activity, and Jeri had brought supplies for 120 caramel apples. I volunteered to take some off her hands, which I placed in the narthex on Sunday, and St. John's members picked them up. An offering for the apples was received, which was given to Linda L. to augment the proceeds from the Preschool Silent Auction

Preschool Silent Auction wrapped up on Wednesday

Speaking of Silent Auction, this annual fundraiser for the preschool wrapped up its bidding at 1pm on Wednesday. Winning bidders picked up and paid for their winning bid baskets. It is amazing to see all the donated items for this excellent fundraiser. Kudos and thanks to all!

Preschool teachers make Christmas gifts for kids

Our preschool teachers have been busy recently, putting in extra time to create Christmas gifts for the kids in their preschool classes. This year, a photo of each child was decoupaged onto a cross section of a tree trunk. A hole drilled in the top of the disc accomodates a string and hook to create a Christmas tree ornament the the kids and their families. Another example of our preschool staff going above and beyond.

Birthday Party for Jesus next week

Next week, on Wedneday and Thursday will be the Preschools "Birthday Party for Jesus." Parents are invited to a program in the sanctuary, for which I get to provide the December temple talk. Last year I was the shepherd. Maybe I'll be the Innkeeper this year.

Willows Communion

On Monday I joined Jan L. at the Willows to lead the monthly service of Holy Communion. Normally led by Pr. Katie from Grace Castalia, I filled in this month, which gave me a chance to visit all our members who are there, as some of them do not attend the group service. It was good to see Carol H. again, she is making good progress since she got the pins removed from her shoulder.

Midweek Advent Service

The second of our midweek Advent Services was Wednesday evening. Total attendance was about 15. Messages are focusing on the the Old Testament lessons from the previous Sunday of Advent

Funeral for Clara Recktenwald

Funeral service for Clara were held Wednesday at the church, with luncheon following. Thanks to the funeral crew for another excellent lunch. Burial was after the lunch and at Union Cemetery in Oak Harbor, next to Clara's husband Ralph, who died in 2005. Obituary for Clara can be found here.

Carpet Cleaning Friday

The carpet cleaners (Balduff's) were going to come Wednesday, but were rescheduled for Friday because of the funeral. They will be cleaning carpet in the, narthex, lounge, and pastor and treasurer offices.

Sunday School Christmas program Sunday

Cindy Mira is directing the Sunday School Christmas program which will be Sunday during worship. Some service elements will be deleted to make time for the program.

Zoom Interim Pastors group

Friday was my monthly Zoom meeting with other interim pastors from around the US and world (Lieve, our convener is a pastor in Belgium). There are six to eight of us in that meeting, and we talk about what's happening in our congregations, and share problems, questions, and prayers.

Kristen working on January newsletter

Kristen has been checking out some possibilities for formatting the newsletter which will be primarily delivered by email. She's found a template in Microsoft Publisher which looks like a good possibility, and which can easily be converted to a pdf and printed out for in-church distribution and mailing to our shutl-ins.

Council meets next Tuesday, December 17

Our meeting will include adopting a new contract for me for 2020. My current contract expires December 31, on my son Erik's 30th birthday.

Plans for Christmas Eve worship coming together

Christmas Eve worship will follow the same basic pattern as last year. There will be two services at 5:00 and 9:00 pm, with only minor differences between the two. Both services will conclude with candlighting and singing of Silent Night.

Interim Update for December 6, 2019

Happy St. Nicholas Day!

For more info about St. Nicholas, you can go here

Update on Clara R.

On Sunday I went to see Clara at St. Vincent in Toledo. On Tuesday she was transferred to Stein Hospice inpatient care at Firelands South Campus. She is being kept comfortable -- I visited today and will continue to stay in touch with her and the family in the coming days. Keep her and the family in your prayers.

Giving by text message activated

We have made known the opportunity and method for giving to St. John's using the online giving portal that is available through Breeze, our church management system. Another way to give online that is available through Breeze is by texting with your smartphone. I activited this feature this week, and received from Breeze a phone number to text. Simply text the word “give” to 4197578467 using your smartphone. You will receive a return message with a link to the online portal. The first time you use the service, you will enter your name, email address, and credit card or bank info. This will associate your phone number with Breeze, so that the next time you text to give, all you need to do to give $10 is text "10" to the giving by text number, and you're done. The contribution will automatically be added to your giving record. Keep in mind that you can also give online through your computer's web browser, which you can see by clicking here. You can find a complete list of giving by text commands in Breeze here.

How 2017 Tax Bill has affected charitable giving

St. John's did not receive the usual end of December bump in giving last year, they we were not alone. Churches and many other non-profits report similar results in their end of year giving receipts. At least part of the culprit seems to be the 2017 Tax Bill which raised the standard deduction to $24,000 married couples filing jointly, and $12,000 for single filers. In the past when the standard deduction less than half those amounts, many taxpayers were able to itemize deductions and thus benefit from making end of year contributions. For more info on this phenomenon, go here.

Call Committee does mock interview

I was informed that the Call Committee met on Tuesday evening, and conducted a mock interview with Pastor Scott as the guinea pig. I have done several of these myself, and the response has always been positive, as it gives the Committee at least a bit of practice in conducting a thorough and effective interview. Thanks, Pastor Scott for your continued service to St. John's!

Visits

Trying to get to as many of our shut-ins as I can before Christmas with Holy Communion. Bellevue Care and Orchard Grove last week, Tom L. at Providence Commons and Sandy W. at The Meadows at Osborn Park in Sandusky on Thursday. Will do group Holy Communion at The Meadows on Monday for Pr. Katie, so will see the Meadows group then.

Advent Midweek service

We have two more Advent midweek services, on Wednesdays, December 11 and 18 at 7:00 pm in the chapel. We will focus on Old Testament texts from our Sundays in Advent as the basis for our messages. Wednesday night, confirmation youth presented a skit which served as the introduction to the sermon, "Is It Time Yet?"

Lots of very nice silent auction items!

Don't forget to take a look at the dozens of gift baskets that are on display in the preschool hallways, and available for your bid. A great opportunity to do some of your holiday gift shopping without going to the mall, and support St. John's Christian Preschool in the process!

January Newsletter items due soon!

Yes, it's still early in December, but getting your January newsletter items to Kristen sooner rather than letter will make it easier for her to complete her many projects, including Christmas Eve bulletins in a timely manner.

Interim Update for November 29, 2019

Short week for office

It was a short work week for the office with lots to get done -- the usual Monday schedule of recording offering, and then to get three bulletins produced -- Thanksgiving, Saturday and Sunday. New order of service (ELW Setting 4) and Advent Candle lighting prayer to add. Kudos to Kristen who got it all done.

Clara R. Life-flighted

Clara R., one of our distinguished senior members, was life-flighted to Toledo on Tuesday following a very serious stroke. Clara underwent several hours of surgery to treat the stroke, and is doing reasonable well. Keep her and her family, especially son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Evelyn W. in your prayers. Clara had a birthday on November 12 -- she turned 96.

Get your Poinsettia orders in

If you had planned to order a Poinsettia for Christmas Eve, don't forget to get your order form in. Get a head start -- download and print the order form here.

Visit to Firelands ICU

Received word on Tuesday that Sherri and Terri's dad's (Jack) long-time partner Julie was in critical condition at Firelands, and had requested a pastoral visit. By the time I arrived on Tuesday aftnoon, her condition had deteriorated. Learned from Sherri that she died on Wednesday. Keep Jack and Julie's family in your prayers.

Care Center Communion

Tuesday was the monthly visit to Orchard Grove and Bellevue Care Center for a brief service of Holy Communion. MIss not seeing Vera at OG, but did see Dianne B. (and husband Ernie) at BC. Dianne recently moved to BC, as Ernie was no longer able to provide the care she needed at their Rotary Commons apartment.

Thanksgiving service

Thanksgiving worship was held Wednesday evening, with about 25 persons in attendance.

Advent Services

Just a reminder that Advent midweek worship will begin this Wednesday, December 4, and continue for two more weeks on December 11 and 18. We will use Holden Evening Prayer as our order of worship.

Bishop Daniel's weekly message

You can read it here.

Ruth George Memorial dedication on Sunday

On December 1, we will be dedicate new worship furnishings -- a cross, candle holders, and vases, purchased to honor Ruth George for her 2018 gift of her entire estate to St. John's. They will be brought forward along with the offering, along with a dedication prayer. Shaun will will provide a temple talk to speak about Ruth and her marvelous gift to the congregation. Many thanks to Dennis B. for his hard word in shopping for and ordering the new furnishings. I have seen them, and they are very beautiful. We will need to find a home for the items we will be retiring.

Interim Update for November 22, 2019

Successful Middle School Youth event

Last Sunday, about 13 youth and 7 adults gathered for a few hours of games, fellowship and food. A scavenger hunt sending youth out (with adults in tow) to various locations on and around main street to find various items and photograph them. More games were played back at the church and the group enjoyed a pizza and other goodies. Thanks to Confirmation youth parents who planned and carried out the event. Several of the youth brought friends with them. Well done, everyone!

New Mailchimp account

This past week I opened a Mailchimp account to help us manage our email list and to send out future mass or targeted emails. I entered all the email addresses that are currently in our Breeze (our current church management software) account (a total of 94 addresses), and then drafted and sent a "Welcome" email, which you all should have received. The advantages of using an email service as opposed to "group addressed" emails using your email client/program are as follows:

  • Provides for easy management of your email list
  • Links with Breeze -- any changes in email addresses entered into Breeze are automatically uploaded to Mailchimp, eliminating the need to update them in both databases
  • Mailchimp will indicate which addresses are bounced (undeliverable -- 8 addresses from first email bounced)
  • Mailchimp will indicate how many have opened the emails sent from your account. So far, 45% have opened the first email sent

We will certainly need more St. John's members to provide us with their email addresses. Our plan is to end the distribution of the newsletter by bulk mail through the USPS, saving copying and postage expenses, and move to posting a PDF of the Newsletter online, make a limited number of hard copies available for pick-up at church, and a mail hard copies to shut-ins.

Lunch with St.Nick and Mad River Holiday Train

The Bellevue Ministerial Association is once again sponsoring the Lunch with St. Nick event at the Bellevue Recreation Center from 11am - 1pm on Saturday, December 6. Another community holiday event is the Mad River Holiday Train. You can view flyers with more info, linked below:

Ministry Site Profile

Review of the Ministry Site Profile made a long Council meeting Tuesday evening a bit longer, but Council approved the profile as presented. The financial numbers that I received from Shaun back in September had not been added yet, but I was able to locate those, forward them to James, who will insert the numbers. Then all he has to do is hit the "submit" button, and St. John's and the Call Committee are off and running.

Confirmation lesson

We spent a second session on the 8th commandment, as there is much in this commandment to learn and discuss. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor is the commandment. Luther's explanation reminds us that it means that we should explain our neighbors actions in the kindest way.

Bishop Daniel's weekly email

You can read it here.

Delivered audit info to Jacob at synod

After Mark and Lindsey presented the audit info at Council, it was noted that they need info from synod regarding the format of the audit. I took Mark's contact info and gave it to Jacob, synod administrator. Jacob will call Mark to answer Mark's question.

Interim Pastors Meeting

On Thursday I traveled to Findlay to attend the monthly synod pastors meeting. There were just six of us this time, including former Bishop Marcus Lohrmann, who is coming to the end of his interim at Memorial Lutheran in Toledo, who will soon be voting to call the candidate the call committee has settled on.

Thanksgiving worship

Just a reminder that St. John's offers a Thanksgiving Eve service, Wednesday, November 27, 7:00 pm. What better way to observe Thanksgiving than with worship of the one who has given it all to us.

Ruth George Memorial dedication

On December 1, we will dedicate new worship furnishings -- a cross, candleholders, and vases.

Narthex Announcements Screen

The new 50" LCD announcements screen seems to be working out well -- only little problem is that the android box which displays the image goes to screen saver after two hours (which has happened just before service ends) -- all it takes is a click from the remote to turn it back on again, and Heather says she'll keep an eye and keep it running. If you have an announcement you'd like to put up, let me, Kristen, or Heather know and we'll type it in.

Interim Update for November 15, 2019

Stewardship Stew and Annual Meeting

The Annual Meeting will be this Sunday, November 17, following worship. Before the meeting, the Fellowship Committee will be serving "Stewardship Stew," a simple but tasty lunch, with the meeting to follow. Important agenda items will include elections, 2020 budget, and the proposals for flooring in education wing and AC in the sanctuary.

Funeral for Marabelle

On Saturday I met with Marabelle's familyl to plan the service for their mom. The service, (family only) was at Auxter on Monday morning. Special thanks to Roger and Ann P. for their faithful visits to Marabelle (and her husband Bruce) in recents years, bringing a ministry of presence and the sacrament of Holy Communion.

More Holy Communion visitation?

One thing that I have done in previous interims was to begin (or revitalize) what is sometimes referred to as Communion Ministry or Eucharistic Ministry, the bringing of Holy Communion to the home-bound, as Ann and Roger did for Marabelle. Ideally, this ministry has several individuals or couples who do this on a regular basis for congregation members who are unable to participate in worship on Saturday or Sunday.

Another ideal is to have home communion kits on the altar, and before the final Blessing, for Eucharistic Ministers come forward to receive the kits, and remain while the following prayer is prayed:

Gracious God, loving all your family with a mother’s tender care: As you sent the angel to feed Elijah with heavenly bread, assist those who set forth to share your word and sacrament with those who are sick, homebound, and imprisoned. In your love and care, nourish and strengthen those who will receive this sacrament, and give us all the comfort of your abiding presence through the body and blood of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

This is a strong reminder that the Distribution of Holy Communion during this service now continues for those unable to physically attend, and is a reminder that these saints are still a part of our worship and celebration of Holy Communion.

I have sometimes offered a brief training for those who participate in this ministry. Might anyone be interested in participating in such a more structured Communion Ministry?

Stewardship Emphasis continues

Our Stewardship theme, "How Much is Enough?" will continue to guide us in the coming weeks. Packets with Plan for Giving cards were distributed last Sunday, and mailed out this week. Members are encouraged to complete and return their cards this weekend, at earliest convenience, or by mail using the addressed envelope. The fourth and final bulletin insert this weekend reminds us that "Giving is a spiritual discipline." From the insert"

The value of planned and regular giving is in claiming it as a freely chosen spiritual discipline to assist the steward in worshiping God above all things. I choose to make my giving decision first, and arrange my life from there. In this way planned giving is not imposed from without but rather elected from within. And that makes all the difference.

Submitted photos needed for new picture directory

I learned this week from Doug Klein that he and Cindy will not be doing a make-up day, but will plan to do a day next fall, and following years, for new members and anyone else who wants to be included. Hopefully, this will keep the directory much more up-to-date that it has in the past. In the meantime, we will put out the request for submitted photos to be posted in the directory. Kristen has been doing research on printing cost -- looks like it will cost between $6.00-8.00 to print the books. The plan will be to receive submitted photos through the end of the year, and then put it all together in January. Members with email addresses will be sent an invitation to access the directory online through Breeze, our church management software.

Confirmation youth learn 8th Commandment

You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

What does this mean for us?

We are to fear and love God so that we do not betray, slander, or lie about our neighbor, but defend him, speak well of him, and explain his actions in the kindest way.

We have one more class session before Thanksgiving, and for the first three weeks of December we will do mentor meetings and attend Advent worship at 7:00 pm. We'll finish up the Ten Commandments when we resume in January.

Interim Update for November 8, 2019

Stewardship Packets ready for distribution

The Stewardship Team has been been working hard to prepare the Stewardship packets for distribution beginning this wekend. The packets will include a letter outlining this years theme and guidelines for participation, a Plan for Giving Card, and a 2019 to-date giving statement. Members are asked to complete the cards and bring them with them to worship next weekend, November 16-17. To refresh your memory, here's the info from the October 18 update regarding our theme:

Our Stewardship theme this year is "How Much is Enough." We are spending the four weeks of our emphasis focusing on four stewardship principles to guide and direct our lives as Christian stewards. Those principles and the accompanying events are as follows:

  • October 27 -- Gratitude as one’s basic approach to life: All stewardship begins in gratitude to God as the Giver of life, salvation and health. Bulletin insert
  • November 3 -- Stewardship is counter-cultural: Our culture tries to convince us to measure our worth by the impressiveness of our possessions. We are blessed to be part of a community of faith that helps us resist the lure of measuring our lives according to material riches. Bulletin Insert
  • November 10 -- Stewardship entails a life of care for the neighbor: The Gospel sets us free for sharing God’s love with others. Bulletin insert. Stewardship packets will be distributed and mailed
  • November 17 --Giving as a spiritual discipline: The value of giving for us is that it is a freely chosen spiritual discipline to help us worship God above everything else. Bulletin insert. Congregational luncheon after worship, with annual meeting to follow.

Narthex LCD Announcement Screen Operational

I spent some time this week getting the new LCD announcement screen operational. This included connecting an Android TV box, which connects to the internet. We will create an announcement presentation using Google Slides (the Google Drive equivalent of PowerPoint) and publish it to the web, which is received by the TV. I created an initial slide program that you will see this weekend. If you'd like to see a preview, you can do so here. If you click on this link, it might take a few seconds to load. I have it set to advance automatically every ten seconds. So just wait, and it should do that.

Picture Directory Progress Report

The first draft of the photograph part of our new congregational picture directory is ready. Keep in mind it's still a first draft. I'm hoping that we can get a few more families photographed, either by the Kleins or by family submissions. Right now we've got about 65 pictures. Doug emailed the digital files, and I uploaded them to Breeze, our online church management software. Breeze has directory creating capabilities, so that is the plan, at least for the printed version of the directory. As has been the practice with past directories, the printed version will include both the photographs with names, and a more complete list of names, addresses and contact info (phone, email) after the photograph section.

Then there will be the online aspect of the directory. Once we receive a more complete listing of emails, we will send email "invitations" to create an account in Breeze, (the name of our church management software program), which will enable users to view and edit their own information, check their giving record, and set up online giving (one time or continous). And members can view pictures and contact info form other members. Keep in mind that only those logging into the St. John's Breeze account will have access to this information. You can view the draft copy of the picture portion of the directory here.

Pastoral care update

Alwalys enjoy my visits with Clara Rectenburg, who will be 96 on Tuesday. It's been hard to find a time that she's home and I'm available, but we made a connection this past week. Ernie Blank's wife, Dianne has moved to The Willows, so will see here when visit out there.

Deaths and Funerals

On Tuesday morning I did a graveside service in Milan for the grandmother of one of former St. Peter youth. The family didn't have a pastor that was available to the service, so I agreed to be the one. Long time St. John's member Marabelle Smith died on Wednesday. Private family services will be Monday at Auxter. Keep the family in your prayers.

Confirmation Lesson

We covered the 7th Commandment this week in Confirmation.

You shall not kill.

What does this mean for us?

We are to fear and love God so that we do not take our neighbor's money or property, but help him to improve and protect his property and means of making a living.

Call Committee Update

The Call Committee met Sunday during the Sunday School hour and completed the edits to the Ministry Site Profile. It will be presented to Council for approval at the November meeting. Next steps will be to schedule a mock interview, and another meeting with Mary Boals to review questions and interview protocol.

Interim Update for November 1, 2019

Beth Long death

Word was received of the death of Beth long on October 25th. Beth was a lifelong member of St John's. Private graveside services will be held at a later date. Best name will be added to those who will be remembered during worship this weekend for All Saints Sunday. You can read the obituary here.

All Saints Sunday candle lighting

We will again use the final petition of The Intercessory Prayers to remember those St. John's saints who have joined the Church Triumphant since last year. We normally print in the bulletin the names of St. John's members, whether or not the funeral was held at St. John's, as well as any non-members for whom the St. John's pastor officiated. The persons we will remember this year are:

  • Denise Stape
  • Norma VanDemark
  • Marlene Schwartz
  • Frank Osborn
  • Ruth Paul
  • William Cramer
  • Ray Beier
  • Alohoea Lowery
  • Kenneth Fox
  • Corey Henning
  • Robert Sour
  • Beverly DeBlase
  • Tom McConnell
  • Markus Doss
  • Beth Long

Family members who are present will be invited forward to light a candle in memory of their loved ones as they are named. Following the list that is printed in the bulletin, the assembly will be invited to come forward and name a loved one who has died and light a candle.

Preschool Sings

Twice a year, once in the fall and once in the spring, preschoolers and their parents are invited to come to worship, and the preschoolers sing some of their favorite preschool songs. The fall event has been at the Saturday service, and the spring event at the Sunday Service. The fall event will be this Saturday, so we are planning for about 250 to attend. There will be refreshments in the narthex after the service.

Visits

Visited two of our care center members, Marabelle S. and Sandy W. this week. Both are doing about the same. Marabelle is still under hospice care. Keep them and all our shut-ins in your prayers.

Preschool Temple Talk

It was my turn to do Temple Talk this month -- Linda and I do every other month -- so I'll do December (Birthday Party for Jesus), February, and April. It's good to do this time with the little ones. We had to reschedule a couple of times -- was supposed to be last week, but the Doss funeral made it necessary to do this week instead. Then, on Thursday there was a fog delay, which also delays preschool, so had to switch from 9:30 to 11:10.

Flat Screen TV Mounting work continues

Lenny has been working on getting the flat screen announcement monitor mounted on the wall in the narthex, and is waiting for some help from his son. Thanks to both of them for their work on this installation. I'm hoping that this will be a positive addition to the bulletin and newsletter in getting the word out there on what's happening at St. John's.

Hallway painting continues

Zarek Lilly has been doing much of the painting in some of the preschool rooms, and in the hallway. The yellowish walls are giving way to light gray. Hopefully joining the walls soon will be the floor. Congregation will vote on that project at the Annual Meeting. As Zarek has been painting, he has removed the signage, which really should be replaced and updated. The signage still uses the term "Nursery School." There are certainly other upgrades and perhaps remodeling that could be done to make the building more attractive, functional, and welcoming. (e.g. paint the rest of the brown wood trim, as done in the preschool board room? Rework the coatroom space to be more functional? ) A task force, perhaps, commissioned by the annual meeting to review the situation and make some recommendations?

Confirmation Class takes a look at the 6th Commandment

Our lesson this week was the 6th Commandment:

You shall not commit adultery.

What does this mean for us?

We are to fear and love God so that in matters of sex, our words and conduct are pure and honorable, and that husbands and wives love and honor each other.

You can view a PowerPoint of the lesson here.

Call Committee Update

The Call Committee has taken a break for a couple of weeks, but will meet again on Sunday morning. Their goal is to complete the Ministry Site Profile. Council will then approve the Profile and it will be submitted to the Synod and the ELCA website. Another task to be planned and completed is a mock interview. A local pastor is engaged to do this with the committee.

November newsletter mailed

Rebecca came in this week and helped Kristen complete the preparation of the November newsletter for mailing.

Stewardship program continues

The Stewardship Team came in this week to complete the assembly of the Stewardship packets, which includes Plan for Giving cards. These will be distributed and mailed next weekend, for return on the November 17. This weekend will the second of four bulletin inserts on the theme: How Much is Enough? This week's emphasis is "Stewardship is Counter-Cultural".

Interim Update for October 25, 2019

Special Council meeting

Council members, don't forget that there will be a special meeting after worship on Sunday to review and approve the 2020 budget.

Bishop's Fall Meeting

Every October our Bishop meets with pastors and members of the Synod in regional evening gatherings. The gathering for our area was held Tuesday night at Faith Lutheran Fremont. Jan LaBonte and I represented St John's. Attendance at this event was about 150. After indulging in a rich selection of potluck desserts, we learned about the importance of keeping focused on mission and outreach. Bishop Daniel challenged us to consider the difference between being a sent congregation and being a settled congregation. He also challenged us to consider whether we are making disciples, or members. He reviewed with us the current mission statement of our Northwestern Ohio Synod which is this:

Sent by the crucified and risen Jesus to make disciples, equip leaders, strengthen parishes, launch new communities, for the renewal of Northwestern Ohio and the world..

Here are some scripture passages that support the statement (click on each link):

Church Directory Photography

Photography for our new church directory concludes this weekend with appointments on Saturday and Sunday. If you haven't signed up yet, I'm guessing there are slots available. Give Cindy a call at 419-483-5428, or check with her or Pat Olsen on Sunday morning.

Funeral for Markus Doss

Lifelong member of St. John's, Markus Doss, died on Monday, and funeral services were held Thursday morning. The story of Markus and how his life enriched those of his family and St. John's. Special thanks to Nancy P., for her loving concern for and mentoring of Markus. She, along with his family, guided Markus through all his years of Sunday School and Confirmation. It is an inspiring story, and speaks to heart the St. John's has for kids. The gospel reading for his funeral was Mark 10:13-14, which was his confirmation verse. You can aread the obituary here.

Confirmation lesson

Our confirmation lesson this week was the Fifth Commandment:

You shall not kill
What does this mean for us?
We are to fear and love God so that we do not harm our neighbor in any way, but help him in all his physical needs.

You can view the PowerPoint of our lesson here.

Flat-screen TV in Narthex

The flat-screen TV that has been purchased to display announcement will be mounted in the narthex. Lenny is working on this -- thanks Lenny!

Visits

On Tuesday I traveled to Orchard Grove and Bellevue Care for our monthly communion service. Since this was the week before Reformation Sunday, we did a Reformation theme with Martin Luther as guest speaker.

November Newsletter

Kristin will be printing the November Newsletter on Monday. If you have something to get in, there may still be time. Email it to her so that she receives it first thing Monday morning.

Stewardship emphasis starts Sunday

Our Stewardship emphasis starts this weekend with the theme "How Much is Enough?" A bulletin insert will appear for each of the following four weekends. Stewardship packets have been prepared the the Stewardship Team, and will be distributed and mailed out beginning the weekend of November 9-10. Congregation members will be encouraged to return their plan for giving cards the following Sunday, November 17. A "Stewardship Stew" lunch will follow worship that day, with the Annual Budget and Election meeting following.

Something for College Football Fans

While I know that some of you could care less about college football, I'm sure that some of you follow at least one team closely. I've become more of a college football fan since moving to Ohio, as there is a really good team here to follow. Saturdays matchup between the Buckeyes and Badgers should prove to be more interesting that many of the easier opponents in the early weeks of the season. Recently I have also been following Notre Dame, because one of their starting linebackers, Drew White, is the son and grandson of members of one of my first call congregations, Our Savior's in Stanton, North Dakota. Drew's mother was in my first confirmation class, and his grandmother was on the Call Committee. Drew has make quite an impression on his coaches, and is a valuable element in the Irish's defense. You can read more about Drew here and here. Drew's older brother Sean White also played for a D1 team, Auburn. He started at quarterback for portions of the 2014 and 2015 seasons, until he was bumped by transfer student Jarrett Stidham, who was drafted by the New England Patriots in the fourth round (133rd overall) of the 2019 NFL Draft.

You can watch Drew play - he's number 40 - on Saturday night on ABC, as Michigan hosts the Fighting Irish at the Big House. Kickoff is 7:30 pm.

Interim Update for October 18, 2019

Fall Gatherings and Bishop's Bakeoff

This is a repeat from last week, but repeating it to be sure we get a good turnout from St. John's: Register Today! Do you like homemade desserts and finger food? Are you looking for a fun, relaxing evening? Are you interested in connecting with people in your community and sharing ministry ideas? Then join us for the annual NWOS Fall Gatherings! We will be coming together to share communion, prayer and conversation. We will celebrate how the Holy Spirit is moving through our communities. We will look to the Book of Acts to see how we can renew our commitment to be Christ in and for the world! (Copied from the flyer, which you can view here. This is an excellent way to connect with others in our synod who are in our area. The meeting for our area is Faith in Fremont, on Tuesday, October 22, from 6:30 - 8:30 pm. You can register online here.

Church directory photography begins tomorrow

Doug and Cindy Klein are ready to begin the process of photographing members of the congregation for a new picture directory. I hope you've all signed up and if you haven't, it's not too late. Photography will happen again next weekend so if you haven't signed up for a sitting yet be sure to do so.

Call Committee Update

The Call Committee continues its work on finishing up the Ministry Site Profile. They worked for several hours after worship this past Sunday and we'll meet again on November 3rd.

Confirmation Class Studies 4th Commandment

After a good look at the first three commandments, sometimes referred to as the first table of the law, (deals with our relationship to God) we moved on to begin our study of the second table of the law (deals with our relationship to our neighbors), beginning with the fourth commandment:

Honor your father and your mother. What does this mean? *We are to fear and love God so that we do not despise or anger our parents or others in authority, but respect, obey, love and serve them.

You can view the PowerPoint of the presentation here.

Education Team and parents complete planning for fall youth event

The Education Team and several confirmation youth parents met Wednesday during the confirmation session to plan one of several special fun events for Confirmation youth. Our first event will be a scavenger hunt with a Holloween theme on Sunday, October 27, from 4-7 pm. Thanks, everyone, for your time in planning this. Looks like it will be a fun event.

Stewardship Team preps for program

The Stewardship Team met on Monday for a work session to assemble the mailing for this year's Stewardship Program, focusing on the theme "How Much is Enough." We are spending the four weeks of our emphasis focusing on four stewardship principles to guide and direct our lives as Christian stewards.

Stewardship packets will be distributed and mailed
  • November 17 --Giving as a spiritual discipline: The value of giving for us is that it is a freely chosen spiritual discipline to help us worship God above everything else. Congregational luncheon after worship, with annual meeting to follow

Interim Pastors meeting and visits

On Thursday I attended the synod interim pastors meeting at synod office in Findlay. These are always helpful and inspiring meetings. On the way home I visited Cleora B. at her assisted living residence in Tiffin. At age 92 she does very well, and appreciates receiving Holy Communion, as it is not something that is provided by the facility. In another visit this week, I brought communion to Debbie C., mother of Vanessa K., who is her primary care giver in her home. On Saturday I visited Marabelle in Fremont -- she seems to be holding her own, but still under hospice care.

Diakonia begins new course

Our Diakonia participants (Jan, Rocky, Nancy, Joyce, and Rebecca) began a new course this week -- Church History. Instructor is Pastor Scott. Just a reminder, each course lasts five weeks, six courses each year, for a total of 12 courses. Would still like to do a temple talk some Sunday about this program, but not ask everyone to participate, maybe one or two.

Busy week ahead

Interim Update for October 11, 2019

Fall Gatherings and Bishop's Bakeoff

This is a repeat from last week, but repeating it to be sure we get a good turnout from St. John's: Register Today! Do you like homemade desserts and finger food? Are you looking for a fun, relaxing evening? Are you interested in connecting with people in your community and sharing ministry ideas? Then join us for the annual NWOS Fall Gatherings! Photography by Kleins begins next weekend

Over the past several weekends, you've seen Cindy Klein and Pat Olsen in the narthex doing signups for our new congregational picture directory before and after services. If you haven't signed up yet, be sure to do so this weekend. Cindy and Pat will begin making phone calls to families who have not yet signed up to ascertain their participation and to schedule a sitting time. The Kleins will be photographing Saturday, Sunday and Monday, October 19th , 20th , and 21st , and Saturday and Sunday, October 26th and 27th. Some things to remember: Each family who sits for photography will receive a complimentary 8x10 portrait, and additional portraits will be available for purchase, with delivery before Christmas guaranteed. The directory will be available online on a password protected web page, and hard copy directories will also be printed and made available.

Bishop Daniel Confirmation session canceled

You may remember that Bishop Daniel came to St. John's in November for an Eastern Conference confirmation youth event, with many youth from our conference attending. We scheduled Bishop Daniel again for this year, but at Zion Sandusky, for Wednesday, November 20. Unfortunately, another commitment arose which made it necessary for him to cancel our event. We'll try again next year.

Confirmation - Move to Second Table

Do you know the Two Tables of the Law with regard to the Ten Commandments? We have finished the first three commandments which comprise the first table of the law, which speak of our relationship to God. This week we began our study of the second table, Commandments 4-10 which speak of our relationship with our neighbor. We began with the Fourth Commandment: Honor your Father and your Mother. What does this mean? We are to fear and love God so that we do despise or anger our parents or others in authority, but respect, obey, love and serve them. Since we spent much of our time reviewing the first table of the Law, we will begin our study of the second table with the Fourth Commandment next week.

Transition Team gathering

On Sunday afternoon, Paul and Karen Lieber hosted members of the Transition Team and spouses/friends for a cookout and potluck at their home. This continued the tradition of tasty treats at our Transition Team meetings from February through the end of September. Many thanks to team members Paul, Dale, Mike, Tonya, Sue for their hard work and service, amidst the challenges of some health issues, and deaths of family members. The fruit of their labor, the Ministry Site Profile, was passed to the Call Committee on Sunday, September 29.

Call Committee Update

The Call Committee met after worship last Sunday, with the main agenda being review of the Ministry Site Profile. They will hopefully have the review completed and ready for approval by Council at the Tuesday night meeting. Other work that the Call Committee will need to do is review and plan questions to ask candidates, and do a mock interview with a neighboring pastor (Pastor Scott, perhaps?) as the guinea pig. The Call Process facilitators are meeting twice this month to interview candidates who are looking for new calls. Once the MSP is submitted and approved by Bishop Daniel, and the written reference is submitted, synod can begin to share St. John's profile with possible candidates.

Visit to Willows

On Thursday I headed to the Willows to visit our members there, including the most recent (hopefully temporary) additon, Carol H., who is recovering from a fall resulting in a broken shoulder and hip. Ellen D. is still there, and looking ahead to some doctor appointments. Ellen hadn't seen Carol yet, so I wheeled her down the hall and around the corner to Carol's room, where I was able to offer Communion to both at the same time. On Sunday afternoon I visited Marabelle at Countryside in Fremont. She seems to be resting comfortably.

Rocky's new Green Beast

I was making a cup of coffee in the lounge kitchen when a Green Beast motored by the window. It was Rocky riding his new John Deer lawn tractor, cutting the grass. I chased him down to get a closer look at this very fine machine. It is huge and beautiful, and according to Rocky, brand new. I don't remember the model number, but it has three cutting blades and cuts a 60" swatch. Get that church lawn done pronto. Thanks, Rocky, for this generous in-kind contribution to St. John's!

First Wedding planned

My first wedding since coming to St. John's as interim is scheduled for January 4 for Alohoea and Tom Lowrey's daughter Melissa and her fiance Donnie. I'll be meeting with them on Sunday to begin the plans for their wedding, which will take place in Sandusky.

Fundraiser for Pastor Brown through October

We'll keep the fund raiser for Pastor Alan Brown and his family, who lost everything in a house fire recently through the month of October. Pastor Brown was installed as pastor of Solomon in Woodville in July. Want to give something right now? Go here, which is a link to St. John's online giving page. On the first line, in the "To" drop down box, click the dropdown arrow and choose "Pastor Brown Family". If you add your current address, Breeze will find you and automatically add your contribution to your giving statement. Note that you can give using either your credit card or your bank account (ACH).

Zoom Interim Pastors Meeting today (Friday)

Every second Friday of the month I meet on Zoom (online video meeting) from 11:00 until 12:30 with a group of interim pastors from coast to coast including one in Germany. We discuss what's happening in our interim congregations, and share questions and resources, and pray together. This is organized through the Interim Ministry Network, an interdenominational organization that provides training and resources for pastors working in transitional (interim) ministry.

Diakonia group finishing New Testament course

Our Diakonia group has been on a whirlwind tour of the New Testament, taught by Pr. Jim Lehmann of St. John's in Port Clinton. The last two sessions are comprised of each class member making a presentation on one or more New Testament books. The Second course on Church History, taught by Pr. Scott, will begin on October 17. I still need to plan a "Diakonia Sunday" where our participants can tells us about the experience.

Busy week next week

  • Sunday - Call Committee meeting after worship
  • Monday - Stewardship Team meets to assemble packets (Stewardship letter, giving card, giving statement) for the Stewardship program in November
  • Tuesday - Executive at 6 and Council at 7 pm
  • Wednesday - Confirmation at 7 pm
  • Thursday - Bible study at 10 and Synod Interim pastors at 1pm
  • Saturday - Kleins begin photography

Membership Transfer for Steve Erf

Steve has been associated with St. John's ever since he and Barb were married. But Steve hasn't officially been a member, until now. A couple weeks ago, he requested a transfer of his membership from Monroeville Congregational UCC. A phone call to Pastor Wayne is all it took, who promptly sent us a letter of transfer. We'll make it official at the October Council meeting.

LCMS Pastor murdered in Fort Dodge

A Lutheran Church Missouri Synod pastor was murdered outside his church in Ford Dodge, Iowa, this past week, leaving the congregation stunned. Fort Dodge, is on US 20 about 90 miles southwest of Mason City, the site of my 1978-79 seminary internship in North Central Iowa. The suspected killer has been arrested and is awaiting arraignment on first degree murder charges. You can read more here. Certainly a situation to remember in your prayers.

Call Committee Installation and Orientation

The Transition Team was recognized for their service, and the Call Committee was installed during worship on Sunday. Following worship, the Committee met with Mary Boals for orientation to the call process. Mary is employed by the synod as chief accountant, and is also one of the Call Process Facilitators in our synod. Normally, each conference in the synod has its own Call Process Facilitator, which for us has been Pr. Katie Suggitt, Grace Castalia. Katie has stepped down from this position, so Mary is filling in, traveling from her home in Defiance.

Mary was very helpful in outlining the process that occurs as congregations looking for a pastor submit Ministry Site Profiles (MSP), and ministry candidates submit Rostered Leader Profiles (RLP). The Call Process Facilitators meet periodically to review all active profiles (both congregation and leader), and works, to the best of their ability, to match candidates with congregations. Here's a quick summary of the process:

  • Facilitators review all active profiles, MSP's and RLP's
  • One or more candidates are selected to receive the MSP of a congregation seeking a leader
  • Candidate decides if this is a congregation he/she would be interested in being considered for call
  • Call Committee receives RLP of this candidate, and decides whether or not to interview candidate
  • Interviews (via Skype or live) take place. Candidates usually provide a video of a sermon that the entire Call Committee can review and discuss
  • Call Committee recommends one candidate to Council, and second interview is arranged for Call Committee and Council
  • Council decides whether or not to accept Call Committee's recommendation, and if it does, schedules a congregational meeting to vote on calling the candidate
  • Based on congregational financial information on the MSP, synod recommends compensation package to offer candidate
  • Congregation votes on candidate, 2/3 vote required to call. Prior to the vote there may be an opportunity for the congregation to meet and greet the candidate, who may offer a brief devotional
  • Candidate has 30 days to consider accepting call, although this usually happens immediately
  • Candidate and congregation plan for transition to new call, including starting date, moving arrangements, and service of installation

This is not an exhaustive list, but includes the major elements of the process. One process item that I was previously unaware of: Some pastoral candidates express interest in coming to Northwestern Ohio Synod from other synods. These candidates are reviewed by the Bishop, and he gives them a rating of 1 to 4, 4 being most desirable. Only those candidates receiving a 3 or 4 rating are considered for call in our synod, and RLP's made available to Call Process Facilitators.

Call Commmittee's next meeting is Sunday after worship. Committee will review and possibly edit the MSP as presented by the Transition Team. I will also provide a copy of my most recent RLP, so Committee members can familiarize themselves with the elements of that document, so they can have a better idea of things to look for in RLP's they will eventually review.

Confirmation class

Our main focus for our Confirmation Class this week was the Third Commandment. Remember the Sabbath Day to Keep it Holy. What does this mean? We are to fear and love God so that we do not neglect God's word and the preaching of it, but regard it as holy, and gladly hear and learn it. You can view the PowerPoint of our lesson here.

Pastoral Care Update

I continue to visit Marabelle one to two times per week at the Countryside Care Center in Fremont. On Wednesday I went to visit Carol H. at UTMC. She had surgery last friday to repair her shoulder and hip. She was expecting to be transferred soon to Willows for rehab. I'm assuming that she has arrived there by now.

Update on Fifth Sunday Outreach

Our first Fifth Sunday Outreach was a very loud success. I should have turned off my hearing aids, it was so loud. Kingdom Kids pulled three red wagons down the center and side aisles, as congregation members dropped pocketfuls, bagfuls, handfuls of coins into the metal bases Radio Flyers. By the time it was over and the cold hard cash had been counted, the congregation had contributed $524, and $125+ more has come from within the preschool. This should be more than enough to purchase the needed iPad for our preschool child. Any extra beyond the cost can be applied to the next Fifth Sunday event, scheduled for December 29. The auxiliary staff person working with the preschool to coordinate this project is Bethany, the speech therapy specialist that visits occasionally to work with children who need her services. Bethany, by the way, is a former member at St. Peter in Norwalk where she was an active participant in our Logos, Catechism, and high school youth programs

Committee Meetings

Worship met on Thursday morning -- we discussed Reformation Sunday, Bible distribution for 3rd graders, and All Saints, among other things. Starting to think about Christmas and who will be playing organ for the Christmas Eve services, as this is Paul's year to be with family in Virginia. Education met Wednesday during Confirmation, I joined them after class was over. Stewardship will not meet until October 14 at which time Aleta will be back in town.

Interim Update for September 27, 2019

Transition Team passes the baton

On Sunday after worship, the Transition Team met to put the finishing touches on the Ministry Site Profile. This team has served St. John's well, hosting several congregational events and surveys to solicit your input for completing this document, ensuring that, as much as possible, it reflects a broad base of thought and opinion regarding St. John's regarding its mission, goals, energy, and the gifts needed by your next pastor. Thanks and kudos to Paul, the "Mikes," (T&B), Dale, Tonya and Sue. Over the months the Team met they were challenged with some health issues, and the death of a family member. We will be recognizing them at the Sunday service this weekend.

Call Committee Installation and orientation

The Transition Team will hand off the Ministry Site Profile to the Call Committee, who will be commissioned, also at the Sunday service this weekend. Mary Boals, from the synod office, will be present for worship, and will orient the Call Committee to the call process in a meeting following worship. This task is usually assumed by the Call Process Facilitator for our Conference, which for the last several years has been Pastor Katie Suggitt from Grace Castalia. Pr. Katie has stepped down from that post, so Mary is stepping up to help. Mary is the Synod Treasurer, but does of these Call Process functions on a volunteer basis. Be sure to give Mary a warm greeting when you see her. You can view her picture on the Synod website at the bottom of the staff page, which you can view here.

You can't ride in my little red wagon

Our first 5th Sunday Mission/Outreach event ready to go. During the Children's message, I'll tell the kids about our project, which is receiving a special offering to buy one of our preschool kids an iPad, which will assist this child with special needs with some apps that will supplement his learning. Then the children will help move some little red wagons down the aisles, allowing congregation members to toss in coins (and quieter money, also!) which will help fund this project. Refreshments will be served in the lobby/chapel after the worship to add to the festivities of the day. Need to empty out your loose change bowl at home? This is a good opportunity!

FLAMe flaming out

FLAMe, Firelands Lutherans Active in Mission, has been a cooperative ministry of ELCA congregations in the Sandusky area. Formerly SALM, Sandusky Area Lutherans in Mission, this ministry was expanded several years ago to include more congregations in Norwalk and Bellevue. There is a core of lay leaders who have many good ideas, but there just doesn't seem to be enough support to keep this organization going. There is an activity on Sunday in Sandusky, assembling personal items for youth in foster care, but not sure if there will be further activities. We have sometimes publicized their events, but I'm not sure if anyone of St. John's has participated. I know I haven't, other than attend the monthly FLAMe pastors meeting.

Update on Marabelle

Visited Marabelle at the care center in Fremont on Saturday and again on Wednesday. She was a bit more alert on Wednesday than on previous visits, and she was able to sing a hymn verse with me, and pray the Lord's Prayer with me. But she is still very weak. Keep her and her family in your prayers.

Carol H. at UTMC

You may have heard that Carol H. fell at the drug store, and broke a bone in her shoulder and her hip, both on the right side. She was taken to UTMC on Wednesday, and I vistited on Thursday afternoon. She was supposed to have had surgery on Thursday, but when I arrived at about 3:30 she was still waiting, so don't know if they still got her in on Thursday or if she had to wait until the next day. She is just very uncomfortable, but still in good spirits. She said go ahead and let everyone know, so we can do that and help keep the prayers coming her way.

Other visits

Tuesday was Orchard Grove and Bellevue Care day. First time without Vera -- they are already missing her there. Becky had gathered about twelve residents at BC for the communion service there. On Thursday, I visited Same D. at his house -- Faith met me there for that visit. He's doing OK -- has been going to a few football games.

Confirmation Class -- Second Commandment

Our Catechism lesson on Wednesday night was on the Second Commandment: You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in van. What does this mean? We are to fear and love God so that we do not use his name to curse, swear, lie or deceive, but to call on him in prayer praise and thanksgiving. You can view a PowerPoint of our lesson here.

Doo Wah Diddy Diddy!

Remember that song? I've been hearing it on a regular basis in the halls recently, as the teachers and kids sing the song as they move through the hallway. You can listen to the song as it was sung when it was a hit in 1964, sung by Manfred Mann and his band here.

Solomon pastor and family lose everything in fire

Pastor Alan Brown was installed as the new pastor at Solomon Lutheran in Woodville this past July. Recently, a fire destroyed his family's home. Thankfully, the family escaped uninjured, but the house and all of their personal belongings were a total loss. More information about the family and their needs can be found here.

Interim Update for September 20, 2019

Pastors retreat on Monday

On Monday of this week, I attended a day retreat with the pastors group that I have been participating with for the past 15 years. We meet twice a year, once in the fall and once in the spring, and mostly have done Monday and Tuesday retrats at Our Lady of the Pines Retreat Center in Fremont. However, the last two retreats were held and Pastor Henry and Becky's house west of Fremont, and with the retreat this week we moved to a one day format. With so many of our group now retired, our focus has been a little different, but still it's good to gather for prayer, fellowship, worship, and good eats. Thanks, Becky, the food at your house is fantastic!

Transition Team almost ready to pass the baton

The Transition Team has the Ministry Site Profile almost completed -- much progress was made at a meeting on Tuesday afternoon, at which a few more assignments were made, and we hope to get it wrapped up at our next meeting, which is Sunday after worship. Call Committee members were announced at the Tuesday night Council meeting, and approved by the council. Call Committee members are Dennis Bauer, Richelle Lovins, Lisa Gittenger, Sherri Doster, James Mapus, and youth member Jake Doster. At a Sunday service in the near future (date not determined yet), I'd like to install the Call Committee, and recognize the hard work the Transition team has done. I'll also meet with the Call Committee to review the Ministry Site Profile. The new Call Process Facilitator (don't know who this is yet) will orient the Call Committee to its tasks, and the protocols that are important to carry out their duties in a well ordered way.

AAMPARO: What's that?

You may or may not have heard that word. It's actually an acronym that means Accompanying Migrant Minors with Protection, Advocacy, Representation and Opportunities. AMMPARO was envisioned after witnessing the plight of children who are forced to flee their communities because of complex and interrelated reasons, including chronic violence, poverty, environmental displacement and lack of opportunities in El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala. This program works with companion churches in the region, including companion synod relationships, and existing ministries in the U.S., and is one of the ways that the ELCA has worked to bring hope and healing to people in need. You can view a video about AAMPARO here.

Statement on Racism and White Supremacy

Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton has issued a statement on Racism and White Supremacy. You can read the statement here.

Picture Directory Signups Begin This Weekend

Doug and Cindy Klein will be the photographers for the congregation's new picture directory. This directory will be done a bit differently than in the past, which have been produced by professional Church Picture Directory companies. Doug and Cindy will be available over two weekends between October 19th and October 27th to photograph congregation families. No purchase is necessary, although photos will be available for purchase with pre-Christmas delivery guaranteed. Also, every family who sits for a portrait will receive a complimentary 8x10.

Printed directories will be available, although entirely at the congregation's cost, either as congregational or individual family expense. This directory will also be available online, although it should be noted that it will be password protected. Doug has suggested that we use on online service called Instant Church Directory. Congregations subscribe to the service for $95 per year, and the website provides on online directory (password protected as mentioned above), as well as the ability to generate a pdf directory that can be printed, and mobile apps for access on your iPad, tablet, iPhone, or Android. You can view the website and what it offers here.

Cindy will begin signups this Sunday, both before and after worship. At the Council meeting Tuesday night, Pat Olsen volunteered to assist Cindy with the signup process. Thanks, Pat!

An Organ Concert during Christmas Break?

In July, Paul took a very nice photo of the St. John's organ from downstairs front of the church, and Kristen posted it on the St. John's Bellevue Facebook page, where it received many likes and positive comments. I also posted the photo on my Facebook timeline, along with a picture of the front of the sanctuary from the back. I received over a hundred likes, loves, and many, many comments on the beauty of the St. John's worship space.

One Facebook friend who took particular notice of that post was Chase Castle. Chase is from Norwalk, and is the son of Chris Castle, one of the owners of Castle Music in Norwalk. I got to know Chase after he started playing organ part-time at St. Peter in Norwalk during his high school years. During my 2014 interim at St. Paul's North Robinson, I contracted with Chase and his dad Chris to provide a music concert for the congregation's annual August picnic.

Chase graduated from Norwalk High in 2015, and then attended Baldwin Wallace, from which he graduated this past spring with a Bachelor of Music degree in Keyboard Performance and Music History & Literature. This fall he started a Ph.D. in Music at the University of Pennsylvania, and his primary instrument of choice and study is organ.

Chase indicated that he would be interested in playing a concert at St. John's on our instrument, and that he would be available during his Christmas break between Christmas and January 8, during which time he is booking concerts in the area. My thought was do a Sunday afternoon concert on either December 29 or January 5. His usual fee is $400, although he says he's "flexible." He listed Bach, Mendelssohn, and Hindemith as composers whose music he would play. You can learn more about Chase, as well as listen to some organ concert excerpts on his website, which you can view here.

Synod Interim Pastors Meeting

On Thursday I attended the monthly meeting of our synod's interim pastors at the synod office. This after taking July and August off. We had eleven in attendance, and good discussion, as we share the joys and challenges of being pastors in congregations in transition. Something new this month -- we now have the option of attending via Zoom (online meeting program), and had one attendee join the meeting in that way.

Visit to Marabelle

I learned that Marabelle S. is now in hospice care at Countryside Care Center in Fremont. I met two family members there on Wednesday, and did a service of commendation for Marabelle. Roger and Ann Paul have been regular visitors of Marabelle, bringing prayers and Holy Communion. Keep her and her family in your prayers. Lord, now let your servant go in peace...

First learning session for Catechism

Our first Confirmation learning session was held this week, during which we learned about the First Commandment. This lessons begins with the prologue to the Ten Commandments in which God declares "I am the Lord your God." So we spent some time talking about the relationship God has created with us through our baptism, and then given us the Commandments, which not only structure life for us and help to keep us safe, but also drive us to the promise and remind us of our need of a savior. I use PowerPoint to present the lessons, and if you want to view this week's Presentation, just clik here, and then click on "Present" at the top of the page. Space bar or down arrow will advance the frames.

Come and "See Through the Scriptures"

Our first "See Through the Scriptures" session was on Sunday at 9 and Thursday at 6. Because of the time limitation, we will likely need two of our sessions to get through a session of the course that was meant for about 90 minutes. It's not to late to join us. This is very good Bible learning material.

Interim Update for September 13, 2019

Adult Bible Class "See Through the Scriptures" Begins Sunday

Beginning this Sunday, September 15, 9am, our adult class will begin the Crossways course "See Through the Scriptures." Dr. Harry Wendt, the author of all the Crossways Bible Courses, will lead us through an eight session overview of the Bible's message, using full color illustrations. As the sessions are designed to be 90 minutes in length, we will likely cover about a half a lesson for each time that we meet. The class will also be offered on Thursday morning, 10 am.

Transition Team MSP Progress

The Transition Team met on Tuesday afternoon to continue their assigned task of completing the Ministry Site Profile. We made some very good progress, with individual members doing "homework" of assigned areas, and then sharing with the Team for discussion and editing. We will meet again next Tuesday at 4pm, and there is the possibility that we will have a completed Profile for Council to review and approve.

First Confirmation session held Wednesday evening

The first Confirmation session of the 2019-2020 program year was held Wednesday evening. Our sessions run from 6:30 to 8:00 pm. We had a total of 9 youth in attendance -- 1 8th grader, 6 7th graders, and 2 6th graders. Sherri Doster was the second adult in attendance -- we have a sign-up sheet for at least one parent to be present with me and the class for class sessions. Thanks Sherri! We did not do a "lesson," as this will begin in earnest next session. This session was devoted to "get to know each other" activities, a group game of Pit (card based trading game), and a pizza snack. Next week we'll begin our study of the Ten Commandments with a look at the First Commandment.

Will the ELCA Will be Gone in 30 Years?

This sobering question is asked by a blog entitled "faith+lead" hosted by Luther Seminary (one of our ELCA seminaries in St. Paul, my alma mater). The reasons? The author suggests three:

  1. We live in a culture that makes it hard for people to imagine and be led by God.
  2. We aren’t clear about what’s distinctive about being Christian.
  3. For these reasons, church isn’t helping many people make meaning of their lives.

The author then offers six suggestions of what we can do about this. You can read the blog post, along with the six suggestions here.

First session of Diakonia in the books

"In the books" describes well the experience of our Diakonia participants. They are diving into the New Testament books of Mark and Matthew, and their textbook (it's big and it's heavy) written by Rev. Dr. Mark Allen Powell, long time former New Testament professor at Trinity Seminary in Columbus. The class leader is Pr. Jim Lehmann, St. John Port Clinton. Of the the twelve who registered for the program, five are from St. John's Bellevue, so that's an excellent representation. One thing that the participants have learned quickly is that the expenses are a bit more than what was expected. Dr. Powell's textbook retails for $40 from Amazon. Some have ordered the book, and at least one got a library copy to use. I think we should discuss at Council if a bit more financial aid can be made available for our participants to help cover the cost of books.

Transfer Brittany Weller

I have received a letter of transfer to St. John's for Brittany Weller from Fireside United Church of Christ. Brittany is the fiance of Nick Erf. Nick and Brittany plan to marry in 2020. We will approve the letter of transfer at the Council Meeting, and then notify her and her pastor that the transfer has been completed.

CCLI License

CCLI is the church music licensing service that many congregations use to reproduce and project copyrighted songs during worship and other congregational activities. St. John's has an existing account, although it has not been active since 2005, the customer service rep told me. Now that confirmation sessions have resumed, I'll be projecting copyrighted songs for the youth to sing. Of course we could also legally reproduce any covered songs for any of our worship services. The cost for a year's license is $133, and is based on average weekly worship attendance.

Marlene update

Marlene came home from the hospital on Tuesday, and I stopped to visit on Thursday. She is getting daily intravenous antibiotics to treat an infection, which will last at least 30 days. Jan and Paul are covering for her again for this Sunday. Of course she's eager to get back to the bench, but we'll cover for her for as long as she needs. Keep her in your prayers -- We love you Marlene!!

Hallway flooring and AC estimates

A representative from York carpet came this week to measure the hallways for new flooring. Now that the preschool rooms all have new flooring, it only makes sense to expand the upgrade to the hallways. Lenny will bring estimates for council to consider. Also to consider is the proposal from Hartland for AC units for the sanctuary, balcony and narthex.

Willows visits

Went to Willows on Thursday and visited most of our members who are there. There's a couple that I didn't get to, but hope to visit them, also, soon.

Interim Update for September 6, 2019

Adult Bible Class "See Through the Scriptures" Begins Sunday

Beginning this Sunday, September 15, 9am, our adult class will begin the Crossways course "See Through the Scriptures." Dr. Harry Wendt, the author of all the Crossways Bible Courses, will lead us through an eight session overview of the Bible's message, using full color illustrations. As the sessions are designed to be 90 minutes in length, we will likely cover about a half a lesson for each time that we meet. The class will also be offered on Thursday morning, 10 am.

St. John's Christian Preschool 2019-2020 up and running

The pitter patter of little feet could be heard, along with some crying and tears, but enough about the parents. This is about the kids. The new preschool year got going on Wednesday. Linda and her team of teachers, support staff and board members have spent hours and hours getting ready for this new year, not the least of which has been the remodeling project -- new paint and flooring. Looking forward to another excellent year of showing our love for God's children.

2019 Rally Day Ready to Go

The Education Team has planned a series of activities to help us celebrate Rally Day this Sunday, September 8, starting at 8:45 in the fellowship hall with grades K-12. Kids will be making cards for our shut ins that will accompany our care packages that they will be taking to them at a later date. The kids will get a chance to meet their teachers and sing songs with Yours Truly. There will also be a scavenger hunt right after church with a potluck, so we hope you will stay and enjoy the fellowship. Meat and beverage will be provided -- bring a dish to share, and see you there!

Gerhard Forde on Law and Gospel

I have hardlyl, if ever, linked to theological stuff in this blog, but after find the page linked below, this week I'm making an exception. Dr. Gerhard Forde (1925-2005) was a professor for many years at Luther Seminary in St. Paul. I never had him as a professor, but have read some of his books. He was widely respected as a professor and teacher of the Lutheran understanding of the Christian faith. One of the key teachings of Lutheranism is the distinction between law and gospel, which Forde wrote much about throughout his distinguished career. You can read some of his most important thoughts about this fundamental Lutheran distinction here.

ELCA Synod Staff Visits Southern Border

Staff of the ELCA Northern Texas Northern Louisiana (NTNL) Synod recently visited McAllen and Brownsville, Texas, to visit with asylum seekers and to listen to their stories. A member of the delegation was Pr. Kris Totzke, who is an Assistant to the Bishop, and she writes of her experience here. Pastor Kris was my predecessor as associate at St. Peter in Norwalk, and before she went to seminary she was the program director at Imago Dei Village camp near Green Bay, Wisconsin during the time Marcy was the site director.

Marlene B. Update

Marlene B. was scheduled for Thursday for a procedure at Toledo Promedica, but was bumped to Friday. She'll be in overnight, with Jan and Paul filling in for her this Sunday. With none of the Saturday musicians available this weekend, Yours Truly will be the musician for the Saturday service, which means that I will play downloaded MP3 organ files as accompaniment for the chosen hymns .

Flat Panel TV Screen for Narthex Announcements

One of the things that some of us have talked about is a flat panel TV screen that we can mount on the wall in the narthex (or other suitable area) on which we can display announcements regarding upcoming events, or report significant events, in much the same way that we do in print form in the weekly bulletins and monthly newsletters. With a new program year beginning, it seemed like a good time to move on this, so taking advantage of Labor Day sales, a 50" LED TV screen has been purchased and donated. A mounting bracket was also purchased for $149, and this will be a congregation expense. We are hoping for volunteer installation. (Property team, you guys are very good at this!) An Android box to receive a wireless signal has also been donated. Kristen will be able to update the Announcements weekly from her computer and send them to the screen.

Diakonia Update

On Thursday evening, the newly formed Diakonia program for Eastern and North Central Conferences had their initial meeting at the program location, St. John's in Fremont. The first class, led by Pr. Jim Lehman, St. John's Port Clinton, will focus on an introduction to the New Testament, and last for five weeks. The program offers six classes per year over two years, for a told of 12 classes. Other pastors leading classes in the program are Pr. Scott Mauch and Pr. Chris Young, no strangers to St. John's. There are currently nine persons registered, and five of them are from St. John's Bellevue. The initial meeting on Thursday evening was a get-to-know-you session, with all the class leaders in attendance.

Lutheran Disaster Response (LDR)

You can read about how LDR is responding to the devastation caused by Hurricane Dorian, and what we can do, here.

Bishop Daniel's weekly message

You can read it here.

Demographics for Ministry Site Profile

One of the series of questions asked on the Ministry Site Profile (MSP), the call process document that is being completed by the Transition Team, involves the demographics of the congregation with regard to gender and age. Using the two statuses of "Active" and "Friend," ("Friend" accounts for spouses of members who are not officially members, but in many cases attend regularly, and also those who attend regularly or occasionally who are not officially members). Here is what I found

  • Active status: 405; Friend status: 69; Total: 474
  • Male: 45%
  • Female: 55%
  • Age 19 years or younger: 21%
  • Ages 20-34: 15%
  • Ages 35-49: 11%
  • Ages 50-65: 16%
  • Age 65 and over: 37%
